How does this work?  Seebeck Effect:

• Thomas Johann Seebeck (1821):

  Discovered the Seebeck effect, where a temperature difference between two dissimilar materials can generate a voltage. 
• Jean Charles Athanase Peltier (1834):

  Discovered the Peltier effect, where an electric current flowing through the junction of two dissimilar materials can cause heating or cooling, depending on the direction of the current.
